In the upcoming episodes of EastEnders, Callum Highway (Tony Clay) is expected to go through a bit of a transformation as a result of a new job opportunity that gives him renewed confidence in his skills.

The cop, who joined the force a number of years ago out of a desire to do the right thing and assist those in need, has had a more peaceful year.

The youthful copper has impressed Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) with his work ethic and ability to perform his duties to the point where he will be promoted to Training Detective Constable next week.

Actor Tony Clay said that Callum is “delighted” about the chance and that he feels like his efforts are “paying off.”

But Callum is in for a wild ride as the trainee detective’s first week on the job proves to be extremely challenging because his new coworker has given him an offensive nickname.

I believe Callum believes it will be [smooth-sailing], and whatever is thrown at him, he wants to be able to keep his head down because he’s determined to not blow this chance this time. Tony said, “It’s not smooth-sailing.”

There will always be opportunity for scandal, but he goes into it wanting to keep his head down and do the job right and be the best detective he can be.

After a challenging first day, Jack comes to Callum’s aid, resolved to stop his coworkers’ unacceptable behaviour. He then assigns his new trainee detective with his first task, which involves searching through CCTV footage of the person they’re looking into, Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara).

But things are about to get interesting as Tony assures viewers that there are “all kinds going on,” alluding to how deeply entwined Callum will be with the Ravi and Jack plot.

We were very excited when he said, “Something is brought to his notice that might cause a rift between him and his buddy Jack, but you’ll have to wait and see what happens.”

It remains to be seen what exactly this finding will turn out to be, but we can’t help but speculate if it has anything to do with the fact that Ravi is even after Jack’s wife Denise Fox (Diane Parish), whom he met at a hotel last week.

We’ll just have to wait and see, as Tony says. The soap star, who believes Callum will develop in his new role, was quick to reassure supporters that the upcoming weeks are not to be missed for Callum.

You’ll see Callum develop into his investigative role and a little bit as a person over the course of the next few weeks, Tony said. ’ He is less overwhelmed by things, so viewers will see him face problems more directly.

We notice a little more development in him in this area; he no longer simply gives in to duress from everything. You’ll notice that in the upcoming weeks and months that he is improving in how he handles situations.

Monday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, EastEnders airs.
