After 17 years of portraying David Metcalfe in Emmerdale, it was recently rumoured that Matthew Wolfenden will be leaving the show.
According to a source, Matthew wanted to explore his options for acting outside of the Dales because he hadn’t lately been given any “tough tales.”
In Emmerdale, Matthew has undoubtedly seen a fair share of grim storylines, such as Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein) grooming Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) in a hard-hitting case of child abuse. During Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu)’s violent spree around the hamlet, David’s life was also in danger.
His recent stories have frequently focused on his financial difficulties as he sought to keep the store bearing his name running, which caused him to make some regrettable mistakes, such earning a speeding ticket that he attempted to pass off as belonging to wife Victoria (Isabel Hodgins).
Since then, David and Victoria have been leading different lives because their partnership was never able to get past this difficult time. Victoria has focused on her position at the Hide, while David is still working at the store with his father Eric (Chris Chittell), since he was unable to keep it solvent without Eric’s funding.
There is much speculation regarding how the character will leave—would he be murdered off or will the door be kept open for a comeback?
Victoria may have a role in David’s leaving because it appears that he will try to revive their romance in subsequent episodes.
One individual who is unhappy by David realizing he still has strong feelings for his ex is Jacob. He could be going to obstruct real love, is that possible?
And what response will Victoria have to David’s passionate declaration? She had previously been quite certain that she doesn’t see them having a future together, but may she be about to alter her mind?
David could be on the verge of experiencing yet another heartbreak, or perhaps a happily ever after is just around the corner. It’s going to be spectacular in any case.
