Next week, the ITV Dales will undergo a change as the official David Metcalfe exit storyline commences.

Since making his Emmerdale debut in 2006, soap opera legend Matthew Wolfenden has been a part of the village’s daily life. However, it has been confirmed that he is leaving the show.

His fictional persona hasn’t had any idea, as of late, what his former fiancée Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) and son Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) have been up to.

Unable to hold their feelings for one another in check for very long, the couple has been moving quietly around the village, fearing that David might be harmed.

Regretfully, when Jacob’s mother Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) chooses to investigate potential candidates for his covert girlfriend, their secret will be compromised.

And to top it all off, David receives the truth in an unexpected way, setting the stage for a devastating birthday surprise.

David’s 42nd birthday is coming up next week, but it will be a strange day because Victoria and Jacob feel like they could be found out.

Rosie Bentham’s character Gabby Thomas is the first to be rumbled as Jacob’s possible covert girlfriend before they can.

David worries that because of Jacob’s relationship trauma, the topic is taboo.

As viewers will remember, serial killer Meena Jutla killed Jacob’s ex-girlfriend Leanna Cavanagh in 2021, sending the young man into a deep depression.

Jacob feels more guilty when he realizes that his father still cares about him, but he and Victoria can’t resist the chance to enjoy themselves in an empty house in spite of the rumors.

When David unexpectedly returns home, they realize just how much risk they are taking and have to scramble.

With the intention of greeting the “mystery” partner, David sees through Jacob’s excuses and is taken aback when Jacob informs him that he was correct—it’s Gabby.

Inside Victoria cringes as she listens in, and when David leaves, Jacob reassures her that Gabby will believe his lies.

Later on, after losing a bracelet David gave her, Victoria is in a panic.

Gabby is left perplexed as David teases her in the pub, while she is unaware.

Jacob tempts Victoria into a relieved kiss after discovering her bracelet on the ground.

They have no idea that a dumbfounded David has been staring at them through the window.

Before long, David makes a significant choice after receiving shocking news that turns his entire world upside down.

Feeling devastated, he bids his loved ones farewell for the last time before leaving the village.

What will Victoria and Jacob think?

ITV broadcasts Emmerdale weeknights at 7:30 p.m.
