In EastEnders, Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) experiences a wild ride as her hopes of becoming pregnant through in vitro fertilization are jeopardized.
Everything appears to be going well at first. The hospital informs Sonia that her IVF is proceeding according to plan so far and to get ready for the next phase.
For Sonia and Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman), who had already experienced many highs and lows before deciding to try for a child through IVF back in the summer, it has been quite the journey thus far.
Reiss eventually admitted to being infertile after discovering a pregnancy test in Sonia’s bag, which caused the couple to fall apart.
After learning that the IVF procedure is proceeding according to schedule, Sonia and Reiss arrange a romantic evening. Everything goes according to plan until Reiss gets an unexpected call.
After suffering a severe stroke, Debbie, Reiss’s wife, requires full-time care and has developed a serious infection.
He dashes to her bedside, but Sonia is scared and upset at home.
Sonia made the best of her grief when she learned earlier in the year that Reiss had a secret wife, even going along to assist with Debbie’s care.
Despite her concerns about the cost, she ultimately consented to proceed with IVF, unaware that Reiss was surreptitiously using Debbie’s money to pay for it.
He revealed to Sonia that he had forgotten about a large amount of money in an account that would cover three or four treatment sessions.
Paying for it seemed like a good option for Sonia, who was concerned that she wouldn’t be able to receive free IVF on the NHS because she already had a daughter, Bex Fowler (Jasmine Armfield).
However, Sonia worries that Reiss’s most recent emergency trip to the hospital could ruin their pricey IVF cycle.
As soon as Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) shows up, Sonia confesses that she feels embarrassed about being so deeply troubled by Debbie in private.
As Kathy consoles her, she admits her worries that this IVF procedure won’t work.
After a trying night, Reiss returns home the following morning, and Sonia musters the strength to encourage him. But does this mean that their hopes of becoming parents are seriously dashed?
