Richard Franklin: the 87-year-old actor from Emmerdale and Doctor Who

At the age of 87, Richard Franklin, the actor most recognized for his parts in Emmerdale and Doctor Who, passed away on Christmas Day.

Following a protracted illness, Franklin passed away “in his sleep” on Christmas morning, according to a family representative.

“We are very grieved by his passing and will remember him fondly for his kindness, creative attitude, and wonderful tale telling,” the representative continued.

Outside of the family, he is also well-known for his lengthy career in theater and television, where he wowed audiences of all ages. He was quite happy with this, and we know that his legacy will endure.

On behalf of the family, Franklin’s buddy Liam Rudden posted the news on social media.

“The family of Richard Franklin has requested me to relay the news of his demise early this morning, and I do so with deep grief.” Richard slept soundly and went to rest. When funeral plans are announced, details will be posted here. Rest well, Richard,” wrote Rudden.

Reading Richard’s posts on social media was one of my favorite aspects about overseeing his accounts. The affection that was offered to him always took him by surprise and humbled him, and he returned the favor in spades. That affection is very apparent right now, and I have no doubt that it will provide his family a lot of peace.

Franklin began his professional acting career with the Century Theatre before enrolling in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1963.

His breakthrough performance on television came in the 1969 soap opera Crossroads, and two years later he played Capt Mike Yates in Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who.

Jenkins kept portraying Yates in radio dramas, spin-offs, and his own book, The Killing Stone, where his persona was the main character.

In the British soap opera Emmerdale, the actor portrayed businessman Denis Rigg.

Franklin also acted as Death Star Engineer Sirro Argonne in the 2016 Star Wars movie Rogue One. He also had appearances in The Doctors, Blake’s 7, and Heartbeat.

Additionally, he had appearances in West End shows, including Corin in As You Like It at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1967.

Jo Grant, played by Katy Manning in Doctor Who, also gave homage.

“Our lovely brave captain Yates #RichardFranklin has gone on his very large journey. I’m so very grateful I met him on Friday,” she said on X, the previous Twitter platform.
