Following her incarceration a few weeks ago, Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) made a short return to Coronation Street tonight, December 25.
Bernie was discovered handling stolen items and now faces jail time. Bernie was informed that she would need to serve at least half of her prison term behind bars. At first, she felt confident and didn’t anticipate such a harsh punishment.
Her family was horrified by the discovery, but Paul (Peter Ash) was especially hurt.
Given that Paul has MND and was just informed that he only had six to twelve months to live, it makes sense that the idea of Bernie being freed following his passing devastated him.
In tonight’s Christmas Day episode of Coronation Street, the problems and distressing circumstances were pushed aside as the inhabitants of Weatherfield got together to take stock of the year that has passed.
The Winter/Brown family was loud and hectic on Christmas Day morning, along with the quads and Joseph (William Brown), but all Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) could think about was Paul not returning her calls.
This made Paul and Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) anxious, so Chesney (Sam Aston) and Todd (Gareth Pierce) went to see how they were doing. Needless to say, they regretted it!
The family gathered around the laptop as night fell to talk with Bernie.
While in the jail visiting room, she told the quads that she would soon be returning home and enquired about the adults’ days.
Bernie chose to sing along with Away in a Manger when he heard it playing in the background after Gemma reported that Paul and Billy had spent some time dancing the “horizontal tango” (sorry).
It didn’t quite go as planned for what was probably Paul’s final Christmas, but one thing is for sure.
It was undoubtedly unforgettable.
