The public would punish the prime minister and Umno harshly, DAPs secretary-general Anthony Loke warned today, if Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob heeds their calls for an early election.
Ismail Sabri was advised by Loke to lead as the country’s prime minister and not yield to pressure from Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his supporters who are adamantly pushing for an early 15th general election (GE15).
“I want to warn Ismail Sabri and Umno that the public will punish them in ways they have never seen before if they organise an election during the period of intense rain and flooding. We at DAP are not concerned; if necessary, elections may be held tomorrow.
“If Umno wants to ignore the serious concerns of the populace, they will undoubtedly face punishment when the time comes. DAP wants to deal with the flooding and excessive rains before moving forward with GE15. Therefore, dissolve Parliament and observe the results, Loke urged today at a special DAP convention in Shah Alam.
According to Loke, DAP has been advising Ismail Sabri politely in Parliament and in Dewan Rakyat that he should not worry about pressure from Zahid rather than putting Ismail Sabri or Umno under pressure to dissolve the legislature.
Ismail Sabri does not need to feel threatened by Zahid because he has the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support him.
“We have repeatedly advised the prime minister in Parliament, the Dewan Rakyat, and elsewhere that if Zahid withdraws his support, he still has the MoU with Pakatan Harapan, so don’t be concerned about his threats.
He continued, “I just want to remind Ismail Sabri that you are the prime minister of this country, so act like a prime minister and not some party follower.
The DAP congress will modify the party constitution today to make party-hopping illegal. Loke stated that this was consistent with the Federal Constitution’s revisions and expressed the expectation that all DAP members present would support this initiative.
Ahmad Zahid stated on Saturday that he would not object to Ismail Sabri calling for the 15th general election this year.
Meanwhile, Loke reaffirmed DAP’s position that the GE15 would see the usage of the same emblem by all PH component parties.
He promised that the PH presidential council would shortly resolve the logo issue.
Additionally, he stated that DAP would support female and young candidates.
“We’re quite proud of the abilities of the women who serve as state assemblymen or in the Parliament. We are confident that DAP’s women branch will play a significant leadership role in our campaign for GE15,” he said.
