Reuters: MOGADISHU In a hit on a militant stronghold in central Somalia’s Hiran region, where the army and coalition troops have been waging an offensive against the rebels for the past month, the U.S. military reported on Wednesday that it had killed 27 al Shabaab fighters.

For years, the United States has been using airstrikes in Somalia to target al Shabaab, an affiliate of al Qaeda. According to the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) website, Sunday’s strike was the sixth one to be noted in 2022.

Residents of the Hiran region claim that al Shabaab’s burning down of homes, destroying of wells, and killing of civilians, together with its demands for taxes during the worst drought in forty years, have compelled locals to organise paramilitary groups to fight with the government.

Requests for comment from an ATMIS spokesperson and Somalia government representatives went unanswered. The operation, which a local elder claimed had just taken 10 villages from al Shabaab.

Rights advocates have repeatedly charged the US with operating in Somalia in secrecy, which may compromise accountability for cases involving civilian casualties.
